Early Childhood Special Education/ Infant Education

Early childhood special education service at the Chesapeake Children's Therapy Center focuses on facilitating young children's global development. Infant educators/early childhood special educators help children to develop cognitive, social-emotional, communicative, and behavioral skills. Since it is not possible to separate the developmental areas of physical and sensory development in young children, educators collaborate with physical/occupational/speech therapists as a team. Parents and care givers are the most important and influential individuals of a child's development. Therefore, educational services include consulting, guiding/coaching, and instructing parents.

Our education service follows the best recommended practices in early childhood special education: developmentally appropriate practice, activity-based, child-centered, family-centered, research based, and multidisciplinary approach.

Special educators provide developmental evaluation, consultation, and instruction related to:
  • Cognitive skills including play skills, imitation skills, imaginary play skills, problem-solving skills, understanding of objects, attention, memory, color/ size/ number/ picture concepts
  • Interpersonal skills including social games, joint attention, communicative skills, peer interaction
  • Emotional development
  • Self-concept development
